Objectives

The EMODNET Black Sea checkpoint is a sea-basin monitoring system assessment activity aiming to support sustainable growth in the marine and maritime economy by assessing the potential of current marine observation and data services to address end-user needs. Specifically the Black Sea Checkpoint will:

  • Clarify the observation landscape of all compartments of the marine environment and highlighting the existing programs at  national, European and international level;
  • Evaluate fitness for use indicators that will show the accessibility and usability of observation and modeling data sets and their roles and synergies based upon targeted applications;
  • Prioritize user needs in order to optimize monitoring systems in terms of accessibility, availability, multiple-use, efficiency, reliability, time consistency, space consistency, etc. and the planning of the technological advancements, new accessibility, new assembly protocols and observational priorities required in the future to meet the challenges.

Data Sources and Methodology

The methodology focuses primarily on end-user application and involves assessment of the upstream data against 11 important challenges relevant to  sustainable blue growth. These challenges are regional study cases which, through concrete demonstrations of use and value, will participate to the assessment of the observing infrastructure at a sea basin scale for the Black Sea. The challenges are:

  • Windfarm Siting
  • Marine Protected Areas
  • Oil Platform Leaks
  • Climate Change
  • Coastal Management
  • Fishery Management
  • Fishing Impacts
  • Eutrophication
  • River Inputs
  • Bathymetry
  • Alien Species

Data Products and Services

  • A collection of relevant data and catalog of data sources and the development of specific products from available primary and assembled datasets in view of the specific questions for each challenge, providing confidence limits (service)
  • A fully implemented Web Portal (EMODnet Black-Sea checkpoint) providing free and unconditional access to EMODnet portals, outputs from challenges in digital form (Inspire)
