Upcoming Blue Cloud webinars this Autumn

Save-the-date for upcoming webinars in Autumn 2020 on the European H2020 project Blue-Cloud.

Open, free access to marine data, data products and knowledge is crucial to achieve a transparent and accessible Ocean. EMODnet as a key data service contributing to the Blue-Cloud pilot project, together with other leading European blue data infrastructures, including Copernicus Marine Service. These infrastructures are being federated to bring together major resources of data, data products, services, algorithms, and storage and computing facilities. This joint effort will create a trusted virtual space where scientists can access the ocean data, tools, services and research outputs they need to perform research in a more efficient way.

In this framework, a set of five Blue-Cloud multidisciplinary demonstrators aim to test and showcase the potential of cloud based open science and the added value to marine ecosystems research, conservation, forecasting & innovation in the Blue Economy are developed. After the successful first webinar in June 2020, introducing the five pilot demonstrators, over the next months we will get to know them all. The first two are directly related to United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (SDG 14-to ‘conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’) through individual virtual meetings:

Demo: Aquaculture Monitor for Aquaculture detection and monitoring, managed by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS), is scheduled on 25 September 2020 at 11:00 CEST. Several EMODnet portals contribute to this demonstrator: EMODnet Chemistry contribute in-situ environmental data for ground-truthing and EMODnet Bathymetry provide harmonised information on marine topography in Europe.

Demo: Fish, a matter of scale for fisheries, managed by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the French National Research Institute and the Institute of Computer Science at FORTH, is scheduled on 14 October 2020 at 14:00 CEST. Biology data from EMODnet Biology (EurOBIS) and coastline mapping from EMODnet Bathymetry are used to develop this demonstrator.

These two demonstrators will specifically facilitate access to data and analytical tools to understand the status and trends in marine resources, and allow to analyse future scenarios. Experts from the partners involved will provide the most relevant details about the technical and conceptual issues that are being tackled.
