EMODnet Chemistry delivered the first pan-European Marine Litter database. It has been used to compute EU Marine Litter quantitative Baseline, representing a fundamental step of the MSFD Implementation Strategy to provide comparable assessments and to monitor the effectiveness of litter-reduction measures.
Undertaking a regional cumulative impact assessment requires a vast amount of spatial data. EUSeaMap v2016 was a key data source for defining ecosystem components in reporting on the 2011-2016 HELCOM ‘State of the Baltic Sea’.
EMODnet Chemistry contributed to the Commission Staff Working Document IMPACT ASSESSMENT (Reducing Marine Litter: action on single use plastics and fishing gear), SWD(2018) 254 final, with an analysis of plastics distribution coming from for 2 "metacategories", namely fishing gear and single use plastics. The study use the ICES DATRAS available data aggregated per MSFD regions and years.
The challenge of the EuskOOS operational oceanography system of the Basque coast is to disseminate the marine data collected from the Basque Country making them part of global efforts. Instead of building the system from scratch, EuskOOS decided to reuse the widget made available by EMODnet Physics such as the data products and the map sharing service to build its regional operational oceanography system. EuskOOS is also now one of the EMODnet contributors, providing data of the coastal observing system into the European Marine Observation and Data Network.
Symphony is a tool used by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM) to assess the cumulative impact of human activity in Swedish waters. In this operation, EMODnet Geology and the Bathymetry portals provided with good knowledge of the distribution of geological substrate types.
The digital topographic map layers produced by EMODnet do not only show the depth of water, they also indicate where surveys are sparse and confidence in data is low. Extending this analysis for more distant waters requires collaboration with countries outside the EU who have similar programmes.
This webinar will focus on Aquaculture Monitor, the pilot demonstrator managed by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS).
The webinar will focus on Fish, a matter of scales, the pilot demonstrator managed by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the French National Research Institute and the Institute of Computer Science at FORTH.
