River inputs

Scope

The scope of this challenge was to check the fitness for use of the available marine data sets to compute annual water discharges for each river bordering the sea basin, inputs of fresh water discharge as mass and sediment loading, pollution* and biota to sea** (time series), or to indicate gaps in the EU data collection framework during the period specified below.

The result of the exercise provided an estimation of the number of monitored rivers regarding the total number of rivers (of a given category). And for each monitored river, the information produced provided an overview of the temporal and spatial variability of each characteristic requested to better understand the peculiarities of the Black Sea ecosystems in terms of the strong climatic, geomorphological and cultural contrasts that characterize the Black Sea drainage basin, as well as to identify the major trends that could threat these ecosystems in the near future because of climate change and socioeconomic development.

*  as total nitrogen and phosphates loading

** as eels and salmon

(both inwards and outwards, recruitment and escapement)

This activity of the EU BlackSea checkpoint project (DG MARE contract n° EASME/EMFF/2014/1.3.1.3/LOT4/SI2.709436) was executed during the period 2015-2018. The methodology used was identical for all challenges.

  • Production of a literature survey to identify state of the art activities related to the use case and clarify the landscape of monitoring data covering the BlackSea,
  • Specification of needs for production and realisation of the product,
  • Evaluation of the adequacy of monitoring data, that is the availability and appropriateness.

The team participating in the challenge was:

  • National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa”, NIMRD, Romania (Leader)
  • Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, USOF, Bulgaria
  • Ukrainian Scientific Centre of Ecology of the Sea, UkrSCES, Ukraine
  • Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, TSU, Georgia
  • Institute of Marine Sciences, Middle East Technical University, IMS, Turkey
  • P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, SIO-RAS, Russia

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND USEFULNESS OF THE PRODUCTS

Hydro-geo-chemical measurements are essential for the interpretation of water quality data and for water resource management. Variations in hydrological conditions have important effects on water quality. In rivers, such factors as the discharge (volume of water passing through a cross-section of the river in a unit of time), temperature, nitrates, and phosphates influence the water quality.

The 7 products and the data are suitable to describe and to evaluate the River Discharge- Temperature – Nitrates – Phosphates trends and the impact on the physical/chemical Black Sea waters properties as well as for water quality monitoring and for water resource management.

Required inputs

Use limitation and reference

The EMODnet Black Sea Checkpoint practical outputs are the results of the assessment exercise carried out address the so-called “challenges” specified by the call for tenders n° MARE/2014/09 aiming at determining how well the input data from the observing and monitoring systems existing at the sea basin scale fit the user needs to address them.

This product and any resultant data produced was a consequence of these tests and provided on an “as is” basis. The information contained in the data products and in the descriptions (metadata) of the input data and of the data products making use of them was believed to be trustworthy at the time of production. However, its completeness, consistency, accuracy, and usability cannot be guaranteed. Whilst every effort was made to ensure its reliability within the limits of present knowledge, no responsibility can be accepted by those involved in its compilation or publication for any consequential loss or damage arising from its use.
