For the first time at Seafood Expo Global! The European Atlas of the Seas, an interactive web mapping application, powered by EMODnet

The European Atlas of the Seas is an interactive web-based tool for the general public, non-expert professionals and schools. The Atlas is provided by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), in the context of the implementation of the integrated maritime policy. It brings at-a-glance data in a comprehensive and fully visual way.

The Atlas hosts a wealth of information about Europe’s marine environment and related human activities, covering topics such as nature, tourism, security, energy, passenger transport, sea bottom, sea level rise, fish consumption, and much more. Users now have access to an enriched catalogue of more than 200 map layers.

The data provided is based on the collection and management of European marine observation, originating primarily from the European Commission and its agencies (Eurostat, the European Environment Agency, the Joint Research Centre, Copernicus…) and from the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet).

More than half of the datasets provided are supplied by EMODnet and since September 2017, the Secretariat of EMODnet has taken over the management of the Atlas with a mission to further expand the range of services and features and improve the interface, functionality and content. The brand-new version of the Atlas was released in June 2018 with many new features, and an interface more adapted to users.

On the 8 May 2019, visitors of the Seafood Expo Global will be able to navigate through the web mapping application and create their own marine and coastal maps. New features will also be presented such as the print, share and embed options, the availability of the Atlas in the 24 official EU languages and the new feedback form. DG MARE and EMODnet staff will be present to answer your questions regarding the tool. We are looking forward to welcoming you at the stand 7-1411 !
